As the buzz around the National Basketball Association (NBA) continues to grow, one of its most iconic figures, Shaquille O'Neal, is reportedly considering establishing an NBA franchise in Las Vegas. Known for his dominance on the court and charismatic personality off it, O'Neal's interest in team ownership signals a potential new chapter in his illustrious career.
O'Neal's Desire for Sole Ownership
In initial discussions about the potential team, O'Neal expressed a desire for sole ownership. "I would like to have my group," said O'Neal. "I know Vegas hasn't been awarded an NBA team yet, but if they ever get to a point where they are awarded a team, I would like to be a part of that. I don't want to partner up with nobody. I want it all for myself."
Teaming Up with LeBron James?
Despite his initial preference for exclusive control, O'Neal later showed a willingness to collaborate with other NBA stars, including LeBron James. The two were teammates at the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2009-10 season. "If there's ever an NBA team that's going to come here, I would like to be involved, with LeBron, without LeBron, I just want to be involved," said O'Neal.
James, currently an active player for the Los Angeles Lakers, has also shown support for bringing an NBA team to Las Vegas. His experience as a minority stakeholder in the Liverpool Football Club might prove valuable in such an endeavor.
O'Neal's History in Team Ownership
This wouldn't be O'Neal's first foray into team ownership. He was a minority owner of the Sacramento Kings from 2013 to 2022. Currently, he works as a broadcaster on TNT's Inside the NBA. Interestingly, despite his interest in basketball and potential openness to football ownership, O'Neal has ruled out owning a baseball team. "Not baseball. Football, maybe, basketball definitely, but not baseball," he stated.
Former Players Transitioning into Ownership
The transition from player to owner isn't a new trend in the NBA. Michael Jordan, arguably one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, serves as the principal owner and chairman of the Charlotte Hornets. Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors has also expressed interest in owning a team in the future. "Absolutely. Understanding the business and how it's run," said Curry. "It fascinates you to understand where the future's headed."
Despite these transitions, no player currently holds majority ownership or governorship of an NBA franchise. However, with stars like O'Neal and potentially Curry expressing interest, this could change in the future.
As the NBA continues to grow and evolve, the involvement of former players in team ownership adds another layer of intrigue. Whether O'Neal ends up establishing a franchise in Las Vegas, or becomes involved in another capacity, his continued presence in the world of basketball is sure to make waves.
